10 Beautiful Travel Words You Should Know

Travel is such a mix of emotions that it gets really difficult to describe a feeling or an experience. Some languages help describe the feeling better than English and new words are being invented each day to address the other emotions. So here’s a mix of words that ought to help you the next time you are talking about your travels.

We all have had those moments when we look at the stars or at mountains or even people while travelling and feel something within. We try to make sense of this universe and what its made of.

When you do something that you didn’t think you could do or do something that you feared, every time that you think of it, it still brings back a sample of the fear or the rush that you felt. Such experiences inspire you to push your own boundaries and explore what you are made of.

Monotony kills. Post-travel depression is real. Sitting in a cubicle from 9 to 5 makes you want to run away. You think about all the places you want to explore in this world, all the things you want to explore about yourself. Whether it is the unknown that attracts you or your own present situation that makes you want to run away, we all have felt drapetomania at least once in our lives, and people like me feel it on a regular basis.

This fear makes me take countless photographs of everything. I like to document each thing about my trip, right from collecting bills to writing journals about my experiences. The human brain is not capable of remembering everything for a long time. So take pictures, write, collect memories.

Eiffel Tower? The leaning tower of Pisa? Taj Mahal? Or a famous street? They all have been photographed from uncountable angles, each photographer trying to do something “different”. The frustration of having identical photos is something we understand all too well.

It is the awareness of how little of the world you will see. Even if you travel often, it just isn’t possible to see the world for everything that it is made of. And anywhere that you are, you are missing something elsewhere.

That moment when you are sitting with your friends, talking about memories, dreams, life and you feel so connected as if they exactly know what you mean. That uncontrollable laughter and the way your eyes gleam as a thought passes that you are lucky to have them and you are right where you need to be. Life doesn’t get any better than that.

Have you ever sat in a crowded place and wondered how people are living their own life? The way it must feel to be them, their memories, their experiences. Everyone is living their life and somehow they are all intersecting with so many others without realising it.

We truly never understand our journeys, what they mean for us or the reason behind them. Travel changes you but you might not understand that change immediately. You can’t comprehend everything about an experience. Some changes go on deep inside us, a part that we never will see, however the effects of which will be felt gradually.

Someone I try to be. The one who isn’t afraid to make choices, to live life the way he wants to. Someone who takes chances, lives life to the the extreme.

So take risks, make that jump, conquer that fear and always, always choose adventure.

Oooh I love this post. It is definitely one of the most educating posts I have read. Sharing it now on my Facebook.
I am currently typing this comment behind my 9-5 desk so let’s just say I am suffering a serious case of Drapetomania! Can’t wait to go on my next adventure.

Thanks for sharing this. Totally relatable.

Drapetomania. I love this one. Well, all are really interesting, especially Hygge because there’s a similar word in Dutch called Gezellig. I strive for that feeling. But Drapetomania is me most days. It’s funny though because my husband and I just bought a house. It’s like, I want to keep running away, so I can run back! Such a contradiction 😛

Haha! Afterall, it is only when we go away, do we realize the true joy of coming home. And thank you for making me learn the word, ‘Gezellig’. Its always interesting to find new words to describe your feelings.

Beautiful words and beautiful meanings. Most of them were hard to pronounce. But my favorite was definitely numinous ❤
